My “Spiritual Godmother” Joyce Meyer learned hundreds of lessons from the Holy Spirit during her “mess to mission” journey. Many of those lessons formed the foundation of which I built my life and business on. The one I want to share with you today I like to call “Pitiful or Powerful”. It’s based on the story Joyce tells about when she was going through a very challenging time in the early stage of ministry. The circumstance caused her to often complain to God and feel sorry for herself. One day during her prayer time, which had become more about graveling than gratitude, the Lord said to her “Joyce you can be pitiful or powerful but you can’t be both!” Needless to say she chose to turn her Pain into Power! I for one thank God that she did!
I know we are past the halfway mark of 2017! That’s still a little hard for me to wrap my head around. None-the-less it is what it is! Time is moving on! The sad reality however is with time comes challenges, setbacks, heartache and loss. In short, most of us already had our share of pain and suffering this year. My cousin who just recently had a second son under 40 pass away from a sudden illness this year is just one example that comes to mind! When you add something like that to the compounded pain from years prior it’s easy to see how we can become weakened by “soul traumas”.
I’ve come to the realization that life is not for the faint of heart and if you want to survive, much less thrive you have to activate the Supernatural Power Sources that reside within you! God knew that we would need Supernatural assistance to rise above the hurt, pain and suffering that we each would endure in this world. That power was not natural power, or demonic power, it was and is the Supernatural Power of the Anointed One and His Anointing. Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…”
I want to encourage you to resolve to turn your pain into power so that you can turn your mess into your mission! It may be a stretch for your soul (your mind, will and emotions) but you can totally do it! Luke 9:1-2 “Then He called His twelve disciples together, and gave them the power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And He sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.” I know that this is true because I had to OVER COME lots of oppositions through the years in order to have the blissfully-blessed, freedom-based lifestyle I live today! Let me show you what I mean…
On January 3rd 2003 my only brother Nate passed away. I turned my pain into power by opening my first storefront business (A Scentimental Journey). In January 2008 I became ill from a life-threating blood disease. By 2010 I turned my pain into power by turning everything God told me to do in order to heal my soul, body and finances into a coaching company called Sharing The Bliss. By 2011 I facilitated my first 28-Day Body & Soul Detox at St. Philips Baptist Church in Staten Island, NY. That December my sister Darlene passed away 4 days before my birthday. In 2012 I turned my pain into power by hosting 2 Blog Talk Radio shows, getting my first 5K sponsor and investing 10K in a business coach. In May 2013 I hosted my first 2 day live event (Mess-2-Mission). That December 19th (my birthday) I severely broke my 2 (right) wrist bones and dislocated my shoulder. In January 2014 I turned my pain into power by facilitating an amazing 28-Day Body & Soul Detox group program and hosted a multi-speaker online event (The Kingdom-preneur’s 6-7 Figure Business Blueprint Telesummit) that enabled me to fill my first Package Your Purpose group program. In December 2014 the blood illness came back but that May I turned my pain into power by hosting a fabulous 2 day “Business & Bliss” Workshop & Retreat in Maryland and went back to school to become an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach (Certified by NYC)! In August, 2016 my middle sister, Pamela-Iman passed away. She was my last living sibling and immediate family member. I turned my pain into power by going full speed ahead with my 2 Outreach Missions (The Truly Organic Community Garden Project and The Church Health Reform and Wellness Mission).
You see the pattern? I’ve learned how to use the spiritual empowerments God has placed in all of us to strengthen me when I was at my weakest and so can you! Luke 10:19 “Behold I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
Most people allow painful circumstances to take them out of the game. Others use them as their reason for never getting in the game. Then there are those who use their pain to win the game! Don’t get me wrong, I have to fight the spirit of self-pity often. But when it comes on me I simply remind myself that I can be pitiful or powerful, but I can’t be both!
